Fenians Fremantle and Freedom

Celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Catalpa Escape

6 Irish Fenian Political Prisoners.
60,000km. Freedom.
Australia’s most daring maritime prison break
.

Fenians Festival 2026 invites you to remember and commemorate the Irish Fenian political prisoners, transported to Fremantle Prison in the 1860’s, and to celebrate the escape of six of these Fenians onboard the American whaling ship Catalpa. Join us in Fremantle and surrounds from 23 – 31 March 2026 to celebrate and commemorate this important chapter in Irish/Australian/ American history.

The Commemoration

We honour the many Irish people throughout the world who financed and purchased the Catalpa and planned and executed the escape, in particular John Devoy, James Breslin and Tom Desmond. We also remember the part played by Fenian William Foley.

We acknowledge the courage, tenacity and resilience of Quaker Captain George Smith Anthony, who left behind a wife and infant daughter. We proudly welcome his great-grandson James Ryan and his partner from New Bedford, Massachusetts to celebrate with us.

We are delighted to host two very talented guests from Ireland, singer/songwriter Declan O’Rourke and renowned performance poet Tony Curtis, to entertain you.
